Ancient Greek contributions to the world


Ancient Greece contributed many important developments in the every field. They are responsible for so many of the world’s early steps into language, politics, education and the sciences, let us have a look at all the things that Greece has given to us, the whole world, that we should be thankful for!


Democracy

Americans are familiar with the famous description of democratic government by Abraham Lincoln, “a government of the people, by the people, for the people.” It’s less well known that the word democracy comes from ancient Greece
The term "democracy" first appeared in ancient Greek political and philosophical thought in the city-state of Athens during classical antiquity. The word comes from demos, "common people" and kratos, "strength". Led by Cleisthenes, Athenians established what is generally held as the first democracy in 508–507 BC. Cleisthenes is referred to as "the father of Athenian democracy.


Alarm Clocks

The ancient Greek philosopher Plato (428–348 BC) was said to possess a large water clock with an unspecified alarm signal similar to the sound of a water organ; he used it at night, possibly for signaling the beginning of his lectures at dawn. Ctesibius (285–222 BC) had a device which would drop balls of some sort onto a metal plate at a specified time, thus waking up the sleeping party.


Mathematicians

Ancient Greek mathematics contributed many important developments to the field of mathematics, including the basic rules of geometry, the idea of formal mathematical proof, and discoveries in number theory, mathematical analysis, applied mathematics, and approached close to establishing integral calculus. The discoveries of several Greek mathematicians, including Pythagoras, Euclid, and Archimedes, are still used in mathematical teaching today. The study of mathematics as a demonstrative discipline begins in the 6th century BC with the Pythagoreans, who coined the term "mathematics" from the ancient Greek "mathema", meaning "subject of instruction".


Map-making

Map-making, has been an integral part of the human history for thousands of years. Anaximander, around the 6th century BC, created the first set of maps of the known world with the concept of latitude and longitude.


Theater

The ancient Greek drama was a theatrical culture that flourished in ancient Greece from c. 700 BC. The city-state of Athens, where it was institutionalized as part of festivals honoring the god Dionysus.


Olympics

The Olympic Games originated long ago in ancient Greece.The games were dedicated to their gods who were said to reside in Mount Olympus.  More than 3,000 years ago, the ancient Greeks began hosting the games every four years in honor of the god Zeus. This practice continued for almost 12 centuries until Emperor Theodosius banned “pagan cult” rituals in 393 AD. The first modern Olympic games took place in Athens in 1896.
